-----------------------------------
Version 1.0 of 20 Feb 1991

Please see Terms of usage and distribution at the end
of this document for information regarding your right
to use and distribute this software.
Introduction:
-----------
AppleLink Translator is an external translator for use
with StuffIt Deluxe, available from Aladdin Systems, Inc.,
Deer Park Center, #23A-171, Aptos, CA 95003-4723.
This translator provides compatibility with the AppleLink
package facility of AppleLink 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0.
This translator requires that you have StuffIt Deluxe or
StuffIt Classic. It is designed for uncompressing AppleLink
packages and creating AppleLink packages without requiring
the AppleLink application itself.
Installation:
-----------
The rest of this documentation assumes that you have properly
installed StuffIt Deluxe and are familiar with the operation
of StuffIt Deluxe.
To install this translator, placed it in the Translators
folder in the System folder of your startup drive. Then
launch (or quit and relaunch, as appropriate) StuffIt Deluxe.
If you are in Standard menu mode, you must switch to Expert
menu mode to use this translator.
Operation:
---------
After installation, you will have a new choice under the
Other menu with the name "AppleLink Package". This is a
hierarchical menu, with additional choices of "Expand from
Package…" and "Compress into Package…". Operation of the
translator can occur in the background, when running under
MultiFinder™ or System 7.0, if so desired.
Expand from Package:
-------------------
To expand the contents of an AppleLink Package, choose the
"Expand" menu option. You will be presented with a Standard
File Dialog, which will allow you to select a Package to
expand, or Cancel etc. The Package will be opened, and a new
modified Standard File Dialog will be presented. The contents
of the package will be displayed in a list in the dialog. If the
package was created by a recent version of AppleLink, such as
6.0, it is possible that the package contains hierarchical folders,
much like the standard Macintosh Hierarchical Filing System.
In such cases, it is possible to select a folder, and double-click
on it to display its contents. Double-clicking on the folder name
again (which will be displayed above its contents), will "collapse"
the folder structure. If you never select any folder or file to
expand, the Save button is disabled, and the default is Save All.
However, if you select a folder or file name, its name will be
placed in the editable text area, and the Save button will be
enabled - this allows you to save a single folder or file, or give
it a new name on the destination disk. You can select multiple
folders or files to save, by shift-clicking to select contiguous
items, or by command-clicking to select discontiguous items.
If you select multiple items, the Save button will be disabled.
Select the destination disk/folder by the usual means. The dialog
will also show the amount of disk space that the expanded files
will occupy, and the current amount of free disk space on the
destination disk.
There is also a checkbox to automatically delete the package after
it has been expanded. And a button for creating a New Folder.
Once you have selected the files to expand, and the destination, click
on the Save or Save All button as appropriate. A progress dialog will
be displayed, and progress indicated, as the files are expanded.
If you selected Save, rather than Save All, then the dialog will be
presented again, to repeat the above operations, until such time
you Cancel (the Done button), all the files have been expanded, or
some error occurs.
Compress into Package:
---------------------
To compress selected files into an AppleLink Package, choose the
"Compress" menu option. You will be presented with a modified
Standard File Dialog, which will allow you to select files and
folders to compress. Use the Add button to add selected files
and folders to the package. You can open selected folders by clicking
the Open button, or double-clicking on the folder name. You can
double-click on selected files as a shortcut to Add them.
The contents of the package will be displayed in a list in the dialog.
The uncompressed size of the folder or file will also be displayed.
The package can contain hierarchical folders, much like the standard
Macintosh Hierarchical Filing System. In such cases, it is possible to
select a folder, and double-click on it to display its contents.
Double-clicking on the folder name again (which will be displayed
above its contents), will "collapse" the folder structure.
If a folder or file is selected in this list, the Remove button will be
enabled, if you wish to remove the selected folder or file.
Tip: to compress a whole folder except for a few files, select the
whole folder to compress, then select the folder name in the list,
double-click to reveal its contents, and select individual files to
remove.
Once a folder or file has been added to the package, the Compress…
button is enabled. You may choose this button to compress the
package, or Cancel. If Compress… is selected, you will be presented
with a Standard File Dialog that will allow you to select the destination
disk, a destination package name, or Cancel etc.
Once you have selected to compress the package, a progress dialog
will be displayed, and progress indicated, as the files are compressed.
Finally, a dialog showing the savings made by compressing into a
package, will be displayed.
